Creative Learning – International Programs Interns
Creative Learning, Inc. (CL) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC. Since its inception in 1977, Creative Learning has assisted communities, non-governmental organizations, and educational institutions at home and abroad to foster change that has a lasting social impact. The Creative Learning team consists of four divisions that work to further these goals by targeting different communities:
- International Peace & Security Institute: Empowering Peacemakers – The IPSI division is founded on the core belief that education can mitigate violent conflict. IPSI facilitates the transfer of knowledge and skills to a global audience from the world’s premier political leaders, academic experts, practitioners, and advocates.
- Aid to Artisans: Empowering Artisans – The ATA division creates economic opportunities for at-risk artisan groups around the world through its integrated approach to product development, business skills training, market access and eco-effective processes.
- Global Education Initiatives: Empowering Academics – The GEI division operates short and long-term programs of an educational nature that combine service, academic, and practical experience to deepen participants’ knowledge of, and appreciation for, other national cultures.
- Human Rights & Advocacy: Empowering Activists – The HRA division strengthens the capacity of human rights civil society organizations to respond to human rights violations by enhancing their security and fostering collaboration with the government, and to raise awareness of social and individual human rights through outreach and education.
Interns support the mission of CL and its divisions by researching particular themes, issues, or regions/countries and by providing logistical support for current projects and upcoming Symposia. CL is looking for eight interns for the Spring 2018 semester. The intern positions available are:
Social Media & Communication Intern (one position) – This intern will work with the entire CL team to manage the organization and division online branding through our websites and social media platforms and will be responsible for the creation of content, analytics tracking, tracking online engagement, and ensuring the weekly publishing of the IPSI Peace & Security Report. The intern in this position will also work with staff to create a marketing strategy and content to recruit for current and future programming. Desired experience and skills for this intern include:
- Knowledge of Google analytics
- Experience managing various social media platforms (incl. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn)
- Basic understanding of the Adobe Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop
- Ability and/or experience in editing documents
Special Topics Research Intern (three positions) – These interns will work directly with IPSI directors to conduct high-level research on different topics relating to peace and security for programming and potential grant proposals. Interns will also be responsible for contributing to the weekly IPSI Peace & Security Report as researchers for specific regions of the world. Desired experience and skills for these interns include:
- A basic understanding of topics related to international peace and security. Preference is given to applicants with a research background in CVE/PVE, fragility, stabilization, peacebuilding, or monitoring & evaluation
- Outstanding analytical abilities
- Excellent writing skills (briefing-style and/or academic)
Business Development Intern (two positions) – These interns will work directly with the Business Development Coordinator to support the research, project design, writing, and editing of concept notes and proposals to be submitting to various funding sources. These interns may also contribute to the collection and analysis of data from the monitoring and evaluation of various CL projects and programs. Interns will also be responsible for contributing to the weekly IPSI Peace & Security Report as a researcher for specific regions of the world. Desired experience and skills for these interns include:
- History of producing high quality technical or analytical writing
- Excellent writing skills (briefing-style and/or academic)
- Experience in data analysis is plus, but not required
Training & Curriculum Design Intern (one position) – This intern will work directly with the IPSI team to assist in the development of curriculum and training for upcoming programs and Symposia. This intern will also be responsible for contributing to the weekly IPSI Peace & Security Report as a researcher for specific regions of the world. Desired experience and skills for this intern includes:
- Training facilitation or design experience
- Curriculum development experience
- Excellent writing skills (briefing-style and/or academic)
Projects & Training Intern (one position) – This intern will work directly with the ATA team on special projects and training that will further their programming around the world. This could include creating resources for trainings, managing online course content, working on the online training platform, responding to inquiries from outside artisans, designers, or organizations, and supporting designers and trainers from around the world on implementing ATA projects and workshops. Desired experience and skills for these interns include:
- Strong writing skills
- Experience in training or curriculum research and design
- Ability to communicate in person and online with ATA’s network around the world
- Experience in graphic design is a plus, but not required
Additional desired experience/skills for all internship positions include:
- Strong academic record with displayed interest in the peace, security, mediation, negotiation, conflict resolution, international justice, economic empowerment, international development, and/or economics
- Program development/management experience
- Advanced research, writing, and analytical skills
- Experiential education design experience
- English proficiency; foreign language skills are encouraged, esp. Spanish and French
- Basic technological proficiency (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)
- Familiarity with research databases
- Real-world experience: previous work/internship experience and/or studying abroad
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Positive attitude, curiosity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and enthusiasm for the work of Creative Learning
Eligibility:
- Graduate Students – Qualified applicants must be currently enrolled in, but not yet graduated from, a master’s-level program
- Candidates must currently reside in Washington, DC or be willing to relocate to Washington, DC for one semester
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States; Creative Learning does not provide work/study visas for interns
Remunerations / Time Commitments:
- All internships with CL are unpaid
- Interns are expected to be in the CL office 20 to 25 hours per week
- All interns (minus the Projects & Training Intern) must be available to attend a mandatory weekly meeting on Thursdays from 9:30am – 11:00am.
Academic Credit:
If an applicant’s college or university offers academic credit for internships, CL will work with the school to match academic requirements with the intern’s duties. Necessary forms from the college or university should be submitted upon acceptance to the intern’s program supervisor as well as CL.

Internship Timeline:
The spring internship will commence January 17, 2018 and end after April 25, 2018.
